Postcards from the Road

Spirit Traffic is the story of the 10,000-mile motorcycle trip the author C. Jane Taylor took with her husband, John, and son, Emmett, to celebrate Emmett’s college graduation. They were all new riders, and it was their first trip. In May, Jane and John took Spirit Traffic back to the road on their BMW 650 GSs for a 97-day national book tour. Below is her sixth installment of Postcards from the Road, which will be published every Monday.

Triple digit temperatures and six thousand motorcycle enthusiasts at the BMW National Rally in Springfield, Missouri have zapped my energy. So, I give you photos.

After a successful and fun week of stories in Chicagoland, we enjoyed a moto escort out of town by our hosts Mark and Lorrie-Anne. Yes. He is that tall.

We finally found the open roads of western Illinois.
Postcards from the Road C. Jane Taylor Meeting Manu, a Frenchman riding from LA to NY
In Hermann, Missouri, we met Manu, a scooter rider from France who is riding his electric scooter from Los Angeles to New York. He travels 60 miles a day. We gave him wine.
Postcards from the Road C. Jane Taylor SuperMotoKitty mascot
We finally took on a mascot. SuperMotoKitty has Ganesh-like superpowers (eliminating obstacles, creating opportunity and general shenanigans).
Postcards from the Road C. Jane Taylor set up camp in pole barn before MOA
We set up our tent (not pictured here) in an agricultural pole barn (shaded camping) at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds for the BMW MOA (motorcycle owners association) National Rally.
Postcards from the Road C. Jane Taylor
MOA gave us an indoor booth opposite one of the main events, a vintage motorcycle exhibit.

Keep the rubber side down, my friends.
