Backcountry Discovery Routes is primed to release its 14th cross-state route this spring, celebrated with a full-length expedition documentary. The South East Backcountry Discover Route (SEBDR) traverses some of the best off-road riding in the Southeast on its way from the Gulf of Mexico to Virginia, and the documentary will premier during the Route Release Party on Saturday, March 1, in Roswell, Georgia.

BDR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving off-road riding opportunities for adventure and dual-sport motorcycling. On the BDR website, riders can download GPS tracks of BDR routes (as well as shorter loop-style BDR-X routes), access important travel and safety information, and order physical maps of the routes. BDR works continuously to keep these routes up to date and to add more options for riders seeking adventure.

The South East Backcountry Discovery Route is a 1,300-mile journey starting at the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. From there, it travels across the Florida panhandle and into the Appalachian Mountains through the states of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, before ending in Damascus, Virginia. From Damascus, riders can connect to the Mid-Atlantic BDR for more adventure. The route includes riding in dense forests, along roaring rivers, and down twisty paved roads. There are optional challenging sections along the way, and the route can be enjoyed from early spring to late fall.

The film, which will premier at the Route Release Party at the Aurora Cineplex/The Computer Museum of America in Roswell, Georgia, on March 1, showcases the BDR team navigating the new route alongside special guests from Harley-Davidson, Triumph, and Edelweiss Bike Travel. Tickets are available now. Free GPS tracks, digital maps, FAQs, and travel resources will also be available on the BDR website on the same day. Following the premier on March 1, the SEBDR film will go on tour at participating motorcycle dealerships and clubs across the U.S.

When Hurricane Helene hit the Southeast in September 2024, parts of the SEBDR and surrounding communities were heavily impacted, preventing the filming team from completing the final 300 miles. Since then, BDR has discovered that the majority of those final 300 miles is rideable now, and the communities in those areas will benefit from the economic boost of riders traveling through the region.

“I’m thrilled to share the SEBDR with riders who want to experience the South in a special BDR way,” said Kirk Lakeman, SEBDR route architect and BDR board member. “Traveling from the Gulf to southern Virginia, some of my favorite parts of the route include the white sands of the Florida panhandle, the rolling cotton fields in southern Alabama, the rugged trails of the Talladega and Chattahoochee National Forests, and the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. This fun and flowing route offers a little bit of everything and is accessible to riders with moderate off-pavement experience.”
